Artist Residency
In-Sight is excited to offer a unique Youth Artist Residency program that will provide 3-5 young artists time, space, and materials to work on an independent project of the student’s choosing. This project period will be largely student-motivated with In-Sight staff support for problem-solving, resource finding, risk management, and skill-building!
APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER SESSION DUE MAY 19TH, 2024
What is an artist residencY?
An Artist Residency is an opportunity to have space and time to create artwork. It can act as a place of reflection just as much as a place of production. Sometimes residency programs cost money, sometimes they provide money. Sometimes they offer housing, and sometimes they provide studio space. Whatever shape they take, residencies are often pivotal experiences in an artist’s career that allow for introspective discovery and new creation, while helping propel an artist’s practice personally and professionally.
The In-Sight Residency offers work space, equipment, and instructional assistance for 10-days culminating in a portfolio of artwork and gallery show at In-Sight. Our goal is to provide a creative experience (typically reserved for adult professionals) that allows for youth to curiously explore an idea, project, or skill that they may not otherwise have the time, resources, or guidance to tackle on their own or in the In-Sight core classes. We hope to instill self-determination, accountability, and affirmation in our residents and their goals while giving them the freedom to create and be expressive!

Special guest visitors and field trips
Mid-residency, students will “takeover” the In-Sight Instagram to share their work-in-progress and gain community exposure and support
Participants will create a body of work and images to take home
Residency participation is great for self-discovery & determination, provides a great opportunity to both focus and play, and looks great on a resume!
How to Apply
Each student will complete an application process that describes their project, how it benefits them, and how they would spend their time and budget (with 100-200 words).
The members of our jury panel will value potential (over experience), evidence of curiosity and exploration, noticeable energy around clear goals, and a history of self-motivation. Decisions are also made based on the resources we can provide, how the multiple residents may complement each other, and the practicality of a project in the limited time given. Applicants who haven’t participated in an In-Sight class will need to join us for a brief interview.

Residency Alumni
From February 21-25, 2022, we hosted our first In-Sight Artists-in-Residence, Emma P. and Sora B.! Ideas were hatched, technical issues overcome, and a lot of tea was brewed. We’re proud of the work that our residents accomplished in this first iteration of the Artist Residency program.
“My goal was to create a series of tintype portraits of my family and friends. In-Sight supported, encouraged and made space for my project and I am especially grateful. When I first heard about the residency I thought there was no chance my idea would be picked and when I got the news that Sora and I would be the student residents for vacation week I was excited and overjoyed. I’m so thankful for the In-Sight staff for helping me troubleshoot and learn the art of mock-tintype! Although we stumbled over some learning curves I feel successful and fulfilled with my time at In-Sight and the work that I generated whilst there."

"Hi, my name is Sora I'm 15 and was part of the In-Sight artist residency. My project was to create a traditional fancy shawl made from cyanotypes. I was only able to go for the first few days of the residency, but the days I was there was so much fun and felt so inclusive and everyone was so helpful and supportive. I love In-Sight because of how it doesn't feel like it's a class it feels like you are having hands-on, real-life experiences. In-Sight gives you the resources, time, and space to be yourself and express that through the photography of your choice. This artist residency made me think outside the box and expand my understanding of alternative processes. I love In-Sight because it gives me so many different outlets to express myself and my heritage."
